Pastels

The one thing to know about pastels is that there are three different types
  1. Soft and hard pastels - the most common.
  2. Pastel pencils - similar to hard pastels.
  3. Oil pastels - the same pigments but bound in waxes and oils.
Pastels are known to be traced back to the 16th century. The invention of them is attributed to the German painter Johaim Thiele. An artwork is created by stroking the sticks across a paper, sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely covered with pastel, the work is called a pastel painting; leaving much of the ground exposed is called a pastel sketch.

In my opinion pastels are one of the easiest types of art to work with. A main tip to remember though is to start at the top and work down, unless you want to smear all the hard work you did. Mixing colors are another importance for a great piece of artwork, but when you consider mixing remember to mix little at a time and add more gradually until you have the color you desire. For most people they will want to keep their artwork for a long time so I would suggest you spray an adhesive over it to preserve it longer.

  3. Those are some great pastel projects! I like to use pastels, but it gets really messy.... There is nothing like walking around school with pink and blue fingers, but it does blend well.

  4. By "ground" do you mean the background? Is there a particular adhesive you would recommend?
